Product Description

Calcium phosphates are a group of inorganic compounds that contain calcium ions (Ca2+) and phosphate ions (PO43-). These compounds are important in various biological, industrial, and nutritional applications due to their properties and functions. Here are some commonly encountered calcium phosphates:

1. Hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH): Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral component of vertebrate bones and teeth. It provides structural strength and rigidity to the skeletal system. Hydroxyapatite is also used in biomedical applications, such as dental implants, bone grafts, and tissue engineering scaffolds, due to its biocompatibility and ability to integrate with living tissues.

2. Dicalcium phosphate (CaHPO4): Dicalcium phosphate is widely used as a nutritional supplement, particularly in the production of animal feed. It provides a source of calcium and phosphorus, essential minerals for bone development and maintenance in animals. Dicalcium phosphate can also be found in some toothpaste formulations as a mild abrasive.

3. Tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2): Tricalcium phosphate is another calcium phosphate compound used in various applications. It is commonly employed as a food additive (E341) to enhance calcium content in processed foods. Tricalcium phosphate is also utilized in the production of fertilizers and as a component in ceramics, cements, and dental materials.

4. Monocalcium phosphate (Ca(H2PO4)2): Monocalcium phosphate is a calcium phosphate salt that functions as a leavening agent in baking. It reacts with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to produce carbon dioxide gas, which helps dough or batter rise. Monocalcium phosphate is commonly found in baking powder formulations.

5. Octacalcium phosphate (Ca8(HPO4)2(PO4)4.5H2O): Octacalcium phosphate is an intermediate compound formed during the initial stages of bone mineralization. It can also be synthesized and used in dental materials and remineralizing agents for tooth enamel.

Calcium phosphates play crucial roles in the formation and maintenance of skeletal structures, as well as in various industrial and nutritional applications. Their biocompatibility, ability to release calcium and phosphorus ions, and their chemical and physical properties make them versatile compounds in areas such as medicine, dentistry, agriculture, and food production.
